Wilson likewise born in Va but raised throughout the South due to his fathers job as a traveling minister is NJ since he was President of Princeton and NJ’s governor.

The man responsible for a racist social media post showing Willie Taggart getting lynched has been fired from his job at Hilton Grand Vacations, the company said in a statement Monday.
“Our concern regarding this situation has been a top priority,” Lauren George, a spokesperson for Hilton Grand Vacations, said of the unnamed employee. “The person responsible for posting this information has been terminated. His behavior was in violation of multiple company policies and the furthest example from being a reflection of our company’s values.”
The racist post was made in a Florida State fan group on Facebook on Saturday, shortly after the Seminoles lost to rival Florida 41-14 to finish a 5-7 season. It showed Taggart’s head edited onto an image of a man being lynched with the words “Believe in Something Even If It Means Sacrificing Your Rep,” alluding to the recent Nike ad campaign featuring Colin Kaepernick.
The meme went viral after the man posted it in the comments section on the fan group page. Florida State president John Thrasher condemned the post Sunday, calling it “ignorant and despicable.” The Florida State Attorney for the Second Judicial Circuit is investigating.
Taggart, the first black football head coach in Florida State history, was hired last December from Oregon. Florida State posted the school’s first losing season since 1976 and failed to qualify for a bowl game for the first time since 1981.

FWIW I think all four FDR’s opponents were quality guys. I don’t really have too much critical to say of Hoover(I do feel he messed up on the Depression in many ways but I don’t feel he was a bad guy, just someone who was out of touch with how to respond to a crisis like that), Landon(Very interesting guy who died only a year before I was born in 1986 and ended up championing a lot of the Great Society and whose daughter served with Bob Dole in the Senate), Wilkie (great guy especially on foreign issues, really pissed me off that Zell Miller tried to liken himself to him in his 2004 RNC keynote), and Dewey (Liked the 1948 version better but 1944 was still solid.) TBH I find more to like than dislike about most of the GOP candidates until Goldwater in 1964. I’m probably voting a straight Dem line from 1932-1964 for President but I’m not disappointed when Ike wins even though he did create the Nixon beast but Nixon in the late 40’s through early 60’s was a different guy than the guy who courted Strom Thurmond later.

Now speaking of what would make interesting books at least for people like me, I’d like to see a biography of James Cox who was the poor guy who had to replace the very unpopular Wilson at the top of the ballot in 1920. He got beaten badly at the polls by Harding but he was a strong supporter of the League of Nations, believe he opposed prohibition(which yes is why my username is HappyWarrior in tribute to Al Smith but also HHH), and wasn’t as bigoted as Wilson was about PoC. Harding the more I look at him. I still see a bad President who deserves a lot of criticism but I like him more than i do Coolidge, by far my least favorite Republican President pre-WWII.

Even if Eisenhower doesn’t pick Nixon as his running mate, it’s entirely likely that Nixon runs for president at some point anyway. He was a Representative at 34, and a Senator by 37.
It’s so difficult to look at the past though because inevitably you use your modern biases to judge men and women who were born years ago. As I’ve been telling people about the Civil War, I have zero illusions about my second grandfather. I doubt he was an abolitionist let alone a believer in equality of the races but even if he was, men like him were the exception for that era. Now consequently that is exactly why we should champion and remember men like Senator Sumner who was famously cained on the floor of Congress or Thaddeus Stevens who were well ahead of their day on many issues.

I think that’s teh tragedy of it all. To use football, the Nixon re-election campaign was the Patriots in the Deflategate game. Though TBH a lot of the stuff that preceded Watergate definitely did lead to them getting McGovern. McGovern really came out of nowhere to be the nominee in ‘72 though he had some recon to getting the support of the former RFK delegates in the infamous 1968 DNC.

The thing though is politicians change with the times too. Sometimes it’s flip flopping but sometimes people do change. Now sometimes it’s pure cynicism marking that transformation with how Romney went from when he ran against Teddy Kennedy in 1994 for the Senate trying to out-left him on LGBT rights to accusing the Obama administration of forcing SSM when Obama announced his personal support of SSM prior to Obergefell but people do change with the times. That said, I always found the old Southern Democrats who had voted for the party when it was at its most economically lefty claiming that Bill Clinton or Obama had made it too liberal for them.

Probably one of the most modest backgrounds and most tragic of any modern American President- lost two brothers to TB by the time he was 20 and his rise in national politics was amazing. He went from being a Freshman Congressman to VP in six years. Now Obama did it in four but in that era, I think ti was more incredible. But his fall was so ugly but then there’s the other story where he enjoyed something of a reputation reboot since nearly every President after him sought out his advice on FP.

That’s right. I’m just surprised he was able to do as well as he did against Reagan who was coming off nearly ousting incumbent Ford in the primary in 1976. My dad’s father, the same NLRB grandfather was disturbed by the rise of Reaganism. Likewise, my mom’s father didn’t have much use for Ronnie either. I actually and I definitely see a lot of his flaws both as President and politician have a lot to like about H.W. Bush in some ways. I don’t think his judicial legacy is bad, I like the Clean Air Act and on the spectrum I love ADA, and I think he was solid on foreign policy too. Whether you agree with the fact that we showed a double standard or not with Iraq, I think it was the right thing to protect Kuwait’s sovereignty.

Yeah there’s a lot that can be said about Nixon, the man, the president, and diplomat but he knew FP and honestly he had a lot wisdom on it that man would have been better put to better use. As I said, I find Nixon tragic. He deserves the bulk of the criticism he gets for sure but i find Nixon tragic whereas I find other presidential failures as “Yeah you failed because you never bothered realizing how difficult a job you were getting yourself into.”

I could talk about HIAS and other church groups who do just that, but government has more resources and trained people. Not only that, but these trained people can direct them to resources that help them get on their feet. Spend hours helping them with legal status issues, and counsel them in personal matters when needed without prejudice.
Random individuals mostly can give short-term help, can’t screen them to make sure they are safe, or take weeks off making sure they can get to where they need to go.

That reminds me: When I get closer to done with all the account-closing stemming from the shop’s change of ownership, I need to go after my driver’s license again, and get it upgraded to a Real ID. Right now, it won’t get me on a commercial flight or into some restricted sites. I renewed my passport for that purpose. My old NM driver’s license was not an acceptable from of ID to get a new NM driver’s license, if I wanted the one without the yellow stripe across the top saying ‘NOT FOR FEDERAL PURPOSES’.

I kind of agree with you regarding Reagan. My problems with Reagan are the deifying and ignoring the stuff you mentioned as legitimate criticism and I really think he’s why the GOP went in the wrong direction.

Right. I think Iran Contra needs more scrutiny and his shift from the executive branch that tried to be even handed between labor and management to one that explicitly favored management. As a descendant of union men and a nlrb lifer, I can’t forgive that especially as wealth disparities began their rise in his presidency. He is fascinating I agree tho. I feel we need to have a new generation of historians evaluate him imo.

I will grant real Reagan was better and more practical than the conservative myth but I dislike more about the man than I like. I also find him patronizing especially to his opposition.

I’m going through it because my birth certificate does not match my everything else. When I got my first license to drive in California (wasn’t easy, lemme tell ya. That reminds me: When I get closer to done with all the account-closing stemming from the shop’s change of ownership, I need to go after my driver’s license again, and get it upgraded to a Real ID. Right now, it won’t get me on a commercial flight or into some restricted sites. I renewed my passport for that purpose. My old NM driver’s license was not an acceptable from of ID to get a new NM driver’s license, if I wanted the one without the yellow stripe across the top saying ‘NOT FOR FEDERAL PURPOSES’.

My mom went through that mess with the CA DMV. They wouldn’t use her old (still valid) California drivers’ license for proof of ID. And she couldn’t use her W-2 because they said it was a photocopy and not the original (which seems incredibly stupid since it’s not like most employers send out the old carbon copy versions). After 45 minutes of going around with them, she said “fuck it” because she already has TSA pre-check so she doesn’t need the Real ID for flying.

He disgraced the uniform yet he got nominated for the Senate, got his own show on FNC, and now is a top gun (pun intended) at the NRA. He’s a disgrace but because he protected Reagan, he’s a hero to the right.

Yeah, she had lost her SS card and never got a replacement. I’m also not sure if she has her naturalization papers, since she was young enough at the time that she was automatically naturalized when her parents were naturalized.

I like looking at changes in states/counties over time and the interesting thing for me is seeing the Bay Area exempting Alameda County wehre Oakland is being pretty Republican friendly to a permanent Democratic stronghold and the more inland parts going from being among the strongest Democraic areas to equally strong Republican ones. As I’ve told you, my mom’s parents come from Cambria County which went overwhelmingly for both Mondale and Trump.

Re: Reagan, although it’s a nice line, I never bought his “I didn’t leave the Democratic Party it left me” line. Reagan was born in 1911. The Democratic Party he came of age in and indeed supported as a young actor was very much the New Deal Party. I don’t want to suggest that embracing civil rights was the reason why Reagan felt uncomfortable with the direction of the Democratic party after FDR’s death in 1945 but it is interesting to me that he had no problem with the Dems and the New Deal but started drifting right when the Dems started advocating civil rights. I dunno. I don’t see Reagan as being like Wallace or Thurmond but I do think he’s more like them than he isn’t on race and I guess that’s another huge strike against him for me.

I do give Wallace credit for admitting he was wrong about the Soviets. I have heard that my Pap-Pap, my Nana’s father hated Truman but my Dad’s cousin never explained whether it was for lefty or righty reasons. His family seems to be pretty liberal like ours is but I don’t know which way Nana’s other two sisters and her brother the priest leaned, though I have heard her brother was pretty liberal for his time not just racially but on theology too- he told his sister’s mother in law that she shouldn’t feel worried about attending a wedding in a Protestant church. No big deal to us now but you know how it was for Catholics and Protestants brought up in the 19th century.

I have no problem with it being a landmark as long as it’s mentioned in large letters that a traitor lived there who got away with it. I have a lot I admire about Abraham Lincoln but I think the Radical Republicans had the right idea of a harsh reconstruction for the South. I don’t know if the leaders of the CSA should have been hanged or not- I’m passionately anti death penalty but I do believe they should have been punished more severely for bringing about and enduring the most bloody conflict on our soil.

The polls looked better for Gillum than for Nelson, and looked good for both, but both ended up losing narrowly. Florida was the first to report on Election night, and boy, did it feel like a replay of 2016, with people saying “The Democrats just aren’t getting all they need here”.
Honestly, I started having a PTSD replay of 2016. But it got better. And it keeps getting better.
And if Cindy Hyde Smith has managed to torpedo her chances in what should have been a walk for her, that will be the icing on the cake - 40 seats in the House, and holding the GOP to 1 seat with the most brutal map of my lifetime? That’d be spectacular.

Weeks ago, a site I was following said that the race was too close to call and then, once the Democrat was only .4% behind, asserted that the Democrat was now favored to win. So even though there were thousands of votes to be counted, no one was persuaded to change their calls for the Republican.
I envy that Mars rover. It’s one of the few manmade things that’s completely safe from Donald Trump.
Frank and other Californians though, one of my friends in California pointed something interesting out about this win, apparently Cox considered running in CA-10 there were too many running there so they instead persuaded him to run in CA-21 where no one was and the Dems ended up taking back both. Big pat on the back to Ben Ray Lujan- had to look him up and the DCCC for doing a great job recruiting candidates and supporting them. Definitely hope he’s part of leadership in the future. He’s pretty young, Hispanic, and from a part of the country we’re growing in and I know Pelosi knows to thank people so I’m sure she’s already on that.

I kinda feel like we’re starting to see the wheels come off, with the flashy “accomplishments” all turning out to be illusory, because they were always stupid, but maybe not so obviously. Take North Korea, for example. CLEARLY, KJU played Trump like Isaac Stern played the violin, but to those not paying attention, it LOOKED like ‘Peace In Our Time’. Now the CIA assesses NK has ben developing their capabilities right along, and it’s becoming obvious to all but his idiot base that this is what happened.
Or the tax cut - it was NEVER going to do much, certainly not raise wages, but it made a splash, and allowed Trump to post a couple good quarters of GDP numbers from the ‘sugar high’. Now that’s faded, and the all-too-real deficit increase is facing us.
Trump is all about flash, appearance, and instant gratification. He’s about making a big impression and getting people to put in money. Then he takes his cut and moves on to the next thing. Later on, you find that he didn’t pay contractors, and screwed investors, and that THREE casinos in Atlantic City was a stupid idea.
He’s been doing the Presidency the same way - make grand gestures, make headlines, get praise. The problem is, there’s not a next project for him to move on to. Now his failures will start mounting. The economy will slow down, possibly even go into recession. That will drive the deficit even higher. GM’s plant closings will be followed by more and more as Trump’s trade war starts taking its toll. NK will keep building nukes and using the legitimacy Trump gave them, join the Community Of Nations as a nuclear power. Russia will keep picking at NATO. And Trump has already done what he knows how to do - hold a summit, sign a piece of paper, declare victory, and go home.

Trump is all about flash, appearance, and instant gratification. He’s about making a big impression and getting people to put in money. Then he takes his cut and moves on to the next thing. Later on, you find that he didn’t pay contractors, and screwed investors, and that THREE casinos in Atlantic City was a stupid idea.
He’s been doing the Presidency the same way - make grand gestures, make headlines, get praise. The problem is, there’s not a next project for him to move on to. Now his failures will start mounting. The economy will slow down, possibly even go into recession. That will drive the deficit even higher. GM’s plant closings will be followed by more and more as Trump’s trade war starts taking its toll. NK will keep building nukes and using the legitimacy Trump gave them, join the Community Of Nations as a nuclear power. Russia will keep picking at NATO. And Trump has already done what he knows how to do - hold a summit, sign a piece of paper, declare victory, and go home.
I do wonder if the economy starts to go south a little- I hope not but a realistic possibility given his policies, could we see the makings of a landslide? I think it’s vital not only to defeat Trump but fix his policies in a way that will prevent a future Trump type from taking over.
